Step into a world of discovery, exploration and adventure in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a boundary-breaking new game in the acclaimed series. Travel across fields, through forests and to mountain peaks as you discover what has become of the ruined kingdom of Hyrule in this stunning open-air adventure. Features: •Explore the wilds of Hyrule any way you like - Climb up towers and mountain peaks in search of new destinations, then set your own path to get there and plunge into the wilderness. Along the way, you'll battle towering enemies, hunt wild beasts and gather ingredients for the food and elixirs you'll need to sustain you on your journey. •More than 100 Shrines of Trials to discover and explore - Shrines dot the landscape, waiting to be discovered in any order you want. Search for them in various ways, and solve a variety of puzzles inside. Work your way through the traps and devices inside to earn special items and other rewards that will help you on your adventure. •Be prepared and properly equipped - With an entire world waiting to be explored, you'll need a variety of outfits and gear to reach every corner. You may need to bundle up with warmer clothes or change into something better suited to the desert heat. Some clothing even has special effects that, for example, can make you faster and stealthier. •Battling enemies requires strategy - The world is inhabited with enemies of all shapes and sizes. Each one has its own attack method and weaponry, so you must think quickly and develop the right strategies to defeat them. •amiibo compatibility - Tap the Wolf Link amiibo (sold separately) to make Wolf Link appear in game. Wolf Link will attack enemies on his own and help you find items you're searching for. We will also introduce new The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild series of amiibo at E3 this year. Here is the most up to date info about Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: The World Itself •The game is “Open Air” (Nintendo’s term for Open World). You can go anywhere you want from the start and you don’t have to do really any of the story elements outside of the very brief beginning part. •Link can jump for the first time organically (no item requirement) since Zelda II. He can also climb anything in the world so far, swim, sprint, and even go into slow motion arrow shooting mode… all monitored by a stamina meter. •Dynamic weather at its finest. Lightning can strike metal objects (and even Link himself), wind can spread fire, and rain can put out flames. It’s unpredictable when you’ll need to deal with these elements. •Temperature matters, similar to how it does in the real world. If it’s too cold, Link will need to put on warmer clothes or slowly lose hearts. If Link is too hot, he’ll need to put on cooler clothes. There is a temperature gauge to keep you informed. Beyond clothes, you can build fires, use torches, or cook various potions or food that help sway away the cold/warmth. •There are 100+ mini dungeons in the world called Shrines. Some will give you new abilities and items, others will just give you new treasures. •There are enemy camps. These camps typically contain a treasure chest that won’t unlock until the camp is clear. These treasure chests could contain anything from arrows and herbs to fun items like the fire rod. •You have the ability to mark the world map. While the demo showed the map “pre-marked” – this was for demo purposes only. Those marks have to be manually placed. •According to Reggie Fils-Aime, what we saw in the E3 demo only makes up 1% of the map in the game. If that’s not a great exaggeration, then this would be the largest game world to exist in a game like this. •There are towns and npcs all over the world, but in the demo they were removed to avoid story spoilers. •There are Korok’s hidden all over Hyrule. •We do know the “Old Man” has returned, though it could be a clever reference that’s masking who this character really is. It is the only NPC we have confirmed so far. •The world is under siege by calamity ganon. No, I didn’t forget to capitalize the name. The game refers to him all in lower case. Just a peak at the currently known map: Actions Link Can Perform •This is a massive physics based world, and everything in it is governed by those physics. See a boulder? You can push it and roll it down hills, and if it hits enemies it will hurt them. See a tree? You can chop it down with any sharp object, though naturally an axe does the job better. You can use this as a means to cross chasms or because you need some fire wood. •Fire itself reacts as fire should. You can light anything wood based on fire to use as a means to light enemies on fire. You can create fire with fire wood and flint, then using a metal object to strike the flint to create sparks that start the fire. This creates a campfire, and yes you can cook food on that fire. You can set grass on fire and the fire will spread until there is no more grass to catch fire, or until something puts the fire out. It spreads wildly when the wind gusts. •The Paraglider Item is what Link uses to “sail” off of ledges. The hot air from fires can give extra lift to the Paraglider for a short time. •You get the Magnesis ability from the Shrine of Oman Au. It’s a Sheikah Slate ruin that allows you to “manipulate metallic objects”. It’s a really powerful magnet and you can literally lift or pull anything that is metal with it so long as you’re within range. •Another Sheikah Slate ruin ability is Stasis. It allows Link to freeze specific objects in time (as if time as completely stopped for that object). This can be used almost like an ice freezing ability at times, where you can stop gears from rotating, platforms for flipping or falling, giant boulders from moving, etc. You can even hit objects frozen in time and when they unfreeze, it remembers all the impacts of those blows except they hit the object all at once, causes some really sweet physics based momentum. •Another ruin ability is bombs and they come in two forms. One form is a round bomb that rolls and another in a square one that stays put. They both have various uses, but they are also both unlimited. You are only limited by a recharge timer after each bomb use. All bombs so far are detonated via remote, so they won’t explode until you tell them too. Bombs also work based on physics and can launch items, demolish trees, cause huge chained explosions with explosive barrels, light grass on fire, and more. •In the Shrine of Ke Numut you get the Cryonis ruin, which lets you “create a pillar of ice from a water surface”. If a gate has water underneath it, you can create a pillar to raise the gate. You can also use columns to create cover from enemies. Is the water too cold for link? Create ice platforms to navigate through it. All About the Combat •Combat actions itself are pretty standard for Link based on prior Zelda games with a few new moves in the arsenal. Chiefly if you dodge at the right time you can respond with a flurry rush which slows things down and allows for a huge combo of attacks. The other new attack also involves some slow down. If you jump off of something and pull out your bow quickly, you’ll enter a bullet time style slow down for a short period of time to aim and fire your arrows. You are limited by your stamina meter for how long you can stay in this and fire arrows. •You can pick up literally any weapon and use it, even if it’s something that you wouldn’t think is a weapon. Want to use a stalfos arm? You can. A stick? Sure why not. Want to punt a head of a Stalfos into another enemy? You can. All of these weapons are gained organically from the world, typically by gathering them off of other enemies. •All weapons seen in the game so far also degrade. This means keeping a healthy stockpile is heavily desired. •All weapons seen in the game so far also have stats attached to them. •All weapons have different classes and work differently. A spear is fast and good for thrusting, but an axe is really slow but super effective short range. A one handed sword is quick and good for agile fights, while a two handed sword is good for slower enemies or objects that need a bigger beat down. •Stalfos are rather unique in this game. If you hit one the body will fall apart but quickly try to reform. Was reformed, it will frantically search for its head. The only way to defeat them for good is to destroy the head. As stated previously, parts of the body here can be picked up and used for weapons. •Shields, like weapons, are also found organically. You can get them so far off of enemies or even use things like the lid on a pot as one (known as the Pot Lid shield). •Shields have a new use for travel known as shield surfing. This works on any surface so long as it’s going downhill, and yes you can shoot arrows while doing it. •Another aspect that can effect combat is scouting. You can use the Sheikah slate to scout enemies and check out their health pools. The higher the pool, the tougher the enemy is. You can then use the slate to color code the enemies too, so you know who is who in the midst of a multiple enemy encounter. •Enemies have “alert states”. So if they think they saw or heard something you’ll see a question mark. If they know they saw or heard something, you’ll see an exclamation point and they will run after you. Your counter to this is the ability to crouch and sneak around, with a nifty sound meter to track just how loud you’re being. •Because of the ability to sneak around, there are sneak attacks built in with a single button press. •Horseback combat has returned with the ability to swing your sword and use arrows. You can also springboard off the horse into multiple different items uses, including quickly switching into the paraglider or going into the bullet time style arrow shooting – something we saw shown off at E3 2014. •As stated before, the world itself is fairly organic. If you’re short on arrows, you can taunt enemies into shooting arrows at you. All arrows that miss can be picked up and put in your inventory. •So far, Guardians are the toughest enemy we have seen in the game. They chase you nonstop and shoot massive lasers that deal eight hearts of damage. •Red and Blue color coded enemies from The Legend of Zelda (NES) are back, with blue being much tougher. •Some fights combine multiple mechanics. As an example, when fighting Steppe Talus, you can beat him either at a distance with arrows or using bombs to bring him down low enough to climb him, and then use melee weapons on his weak spot (hello Shadow of the Colossus, nice to meet you). Hunting, Gathering, and Cooking •Hearts are not used to replenish your life, but rather food. •The world is full of things to gather, such as ore and various plants. A lot of it, however, is food based. Apples, meat, mushrooms, and fish are examples we have seen. For meat that isn’t already captured by an enemy, you’ll need to hunt for it. Another area where the sneaking ability comes in handy. •You can eat your food “raw” to help replenish health, though cooking the food increases its potency. Campfire cooking gives small boosts, while cooking pots give big one. You can combine different ingredients to get different effects, including the ability to increase your stamina meter or your total amount of hearts for a brief time. •Ore is presumably used for crafting your own gear, but this ability was not shown or talked about. What we do know is the ore can be traded for Rupees, and so far this is the only known method of obtaining Hyrule’s currency. •Different times of day brings out different animals. •You can fish with bombs… or by swimming up to a fish and simply grabbing it. Story Details •Link is resurrected after 100 years by a strange voice. The voice, combined with the Old Man, is pleading with Link to remember the past and to stop calamity ganon. This is the extent of the story. •One unique aspect of the story is that most of it is optional. You can go stop calamity ganon right away and never find out what happened to the land or why Link had to be resurrected. That or you can go explore the world and find out everything. The choices are yours to make. Miscellaneous Details •Wolf Link amiibo can be used to bring Wolf Link into the game to be used as a companion character. He will have the same amount of hearts as you had when you completed the new Cave of Shadows dungeon in Twilight Princess HD. He cannot teleport with you or enter dungeons, but if you climb a cliff he will go find “another way around” so he can meet you at the top. •The world size doesn’t seem exaggerated. You can mark Death Mountain, open your map, and see a whole bunch of land and/or regions beyond it. We haven’t truly seen the full map just yet. •Every puzzle and enemy seems to have multiple approaches, just like the world itself. This feels right. •There are full dungeons like we’re used to, but they wouldn’t talk about them other than saying they exist. •The game, at least according to one Nintendo rep, is a launch game for the NX. •The game has pro controller compatibility and off-TV play. •They hinted that the horse may not be Link’s only “vehicle”. •It is releasing on both the Wii U and NX at the exact same time. •It is not a remake of Zelda 1. •It does take place on the current timeline. •Fun Fact: The trailer for this game is now the most popular video Nintendo has on their whole YouTube channel. •There is voice acting in the game. It is more than just one character too. However, we aren’t sure exactly how much there is, since Eiji Aonuma has been very vague on the details, outside of suggesting that the voice acting gave a massive impact to him in terms of the story. Really brought it all home, so it may be mostly for cutscenes. •The game runs at a native 720p with an unlocked 30fps. Early performance reviews show it maintaining close to 30fps most of the time, with occasional hiccups that may be fixed on the NX version. •Fun Fact: This is the largest team Nintendo has ever assembled to make a single game. This probably (though unconfirmed) means it is also the most expensive game they have ever made. This will help stop outrageous rumors in their tracks before they blow up.
